I'm a Debian developer since 16 year. I mainly work on FAI (Fully Automatic Installation, http://fai-project.org).
I'm interested in the early boot process, like PXE boot, using nfsroot, creating initrds.
I also maintain dracut (initramfs-tools replacement), rinse (debootstrap for rpm packages) and tcsh (you may not want to switch to this shell these days).

Come and give dracut a try.
Dracut will become the replacement of initramfsptools in the future. But it needs more people that give it a try. If you are a maintainer of a package that includes a hook for initramfs-tools, I may also help you to convert the hook for dracut. Thomas is the package maintainer of dracut.
